Tumunui was formed through the merger of a number of smaller Rotomahana Parekarangi blocks on 22 Mar 1965.  Currently there are around 5000 owners who whakapapa back to Ngāti Kahu Upoko and Ngāti Tumatawera, both who trace their descent from  Apumoana, a son of Rangitihi and brother to Tuhourangi.

The land was developed and under the control of the Department of Maori Affairs until trustees were Elected in the 1970's.
